Computer repairs

We repair desktops, laptops and Macs on site rather than on a workshop bench. You get a diagnosis and a fixed price before any work starts, and if a machine has to leave the building we hand you a loan device the same day. Most jobs finish in one visit.

What's included

  • On-site diagnosis with a fixed quote before work begins
  • Screen, keyboard, battery, fan and drive replacement
  • SSD upgrades and memory expansion, data carried across
  • Windows and macOS reinstalls with your files and profiles intact
  • Virus and malware removal, then a check on how it got in
  • Loan machine while yours is out of action

Common problems we fix

  • “It takes four minutes to get to the desktop”
  • “The fan runs flat out and it's hot to touch”
  • “Blue screen, then it restarts on its own”
  • “It won't turn on at all”
  • “The screen's cracked but everything else works”
  • “It was fine until the last Windows update”

Paying per callout? Clients on a monthly plan don't wait for things to break.

What it costs, and what changes the price

Repairs are quoted per job, not per hour, so you know the number before we start. Callout and diagnosis is a flat fee that comes off the repair if you go ahead — and plan clients pay no callout at all.

  • Whether the part is in stock locally or has to be ordered for that model
  • Age of the machine — parts for a seven-year-old laptop cost more and take longer
  • Whether data has to be recovered before the repair, which is a separate job
  • How far you are from the bayside — everything inside the core zone is the same rate
  • Whether you're on a plan, which removes the callout and moves you up the queue

If the repair is not worth the money we say so and quote a replacement instead. We would rather lose a repair than sell you one on a machine that will fail again in six months.

What's not included

Worth knowing up front, so nothing on the invoice is a surprise. Where something falls outside what we do, we'll tell you who should do it.

  • Board-level soldering and liquid damage — we refer these to a specialist
  • Physical data recovery from a failed drive, which needs a clean room
  • Repairs to devices still covered by a manufacturer warranty, where a claim is cheaper
  • Software licences and hardware, which are quoted separately at cost

A job like this

A Capalaba wholesaler had three machines quoted for replacement by another provider. Two of them just needed SSDs — about a fifth of the replacement cost each, and both are still in service three years later. The third genuinely was finished, and we said so.

Questions about computer repairs

Do you take the computer away?

Usually not. We diagnose and repair on site so you keep your data in the building. If a job needs a bench — a board-level repair or a data recovery — we take it, log it, and leave a loan machine with you the same day.

How much does a repair cost?

You get a fixed quote after the diagnosis and before we touch anything. Callout and diagnosis is a flat fee, and it comes off the repair if you go ahead. Plan clients don't pay a callout at all.

Can you recover files from a dead machine?

Often, yes. If the drive is readable we copy your data off before doing anything else. If it has physically failed we'll tell you honestly whether a specialist recovery is worth the money, and we won't charge you to find out.

Do you repair Macs?

Yes. Drives, memory where it's replaceable, screens, batteries, macOS reinstalls and migrations. For anything soldered or under Apple warranty we'll say so rather than quote you for a repair that isn't sensible.

Is it worth repairing a computer that is four years old?

It depends on what failed. A single failed part in an otherwise healthy four-year-old machine is worth fixing; a machine that is slow at everything, out of operating-system support, or on its second fault in a year is not. Our rough rule is that a repair costing more than about a third of a comparable new machine is usually the wrong call, and we tell you which side of that line you are on before quoting.

Can you fix a computer while we keep working?

Usually. Most repairs happen at the desk, and where a machine has to leave we hand over a loan device the same day with your files and email already on it. For an office that cannot lose a workstation at all, we keep a spare configured to your standard so the swap takes minutes.

Most often for trades with an office and real estate — though the underlying work is much the same whatever you do.
