Owner and lead technician

Jass Singh

Every article on this site is written by the person who does the work. If you book a callout in the Redlands or on the Gold Coast, this is usually who turns up.

Who does the work

Jass owns and runs Kosmos IT, trading as TechBusters. The business is deliberately small and deliberately mobile: rather than a workshop counter and a queue, he works on site in offices between Wynnum and Coomera, which means the environment gets seen as it actually is — the cabling, the cupboard the switch lives in, the extender someone added in 2019.

The day-to-day is unglamorous and specific: hosted ledger software that crawls at the end of October, a practice management system nobody but one person understands, a backup that has been silently failing for four months, an invoice email that wasn't from the supplier. Most of the guides in the knowledge hub exist because the same question came up on the phone three times in a fortnight.

The useful part of running the business as well as doing the work is that the two questions get asked together. What a system costs to run, who has to use it every day, and whether the fix is worth the disruption are the same conversation, not a technical decision handed to someone else afterwards. That covers the unglamorous breadth of it — infrastructure, Microsoft 365, security, and the operational side of how a small office actually functions.

The bias is towards the simplest thing that will hold. A three-person firm does not need what a fifty-person firm needs, and selling it to them is how businesses end up paying for complexity they can neither use nor maintain. Where something genuinely does need to change, he will say so plainly and explain what happens if it doesn't.

What he works on most

  • Managed IT for offices of three to thirty — accounting firms, law firms, allied health practices, agencies and trades with an office
  • Microsoft 365 tenancies: migrations, licensing, mail flow, SharePoint structure that survives staff turnover
  • Business networks and Wi-Fi that has to reach a workshop as well as a desk
  • Backup and disaster recovery — including the part most providers skip, which is testing the restore
  • Practical cyber security: MFA, patching, and training staff to spot the invoice that isn't real
