What is AEO, and how is it different from SEO?

Every agency in the country started selling AEO about six months ago. Most of it is SEO with a new invoice line. Here is what is genuinely different, and what is not.

The short answer

AEO — answer engine optimisation — is the work of making your business the answer an AI assistant gives rather than one of ten links on a results page. It overlaps heavily with SEO, because both reward clear, well-structured content on a crawlable site. It differs in four ways that matter: answer engines mostly do not run JavaScript, they favour direct answers over keyword density, they lean much harder on structured data, and they weight independent third-party sources more heavily than a search result page does.

Why the term exists at all

A search engine returns a list and you choose. An answer engine returns an answer and you mostly do not. When someone asks an assistant to recommend an accountant in Cleveland, they get two or three names and a sentence each. There is no page two, and being eighth is the same as not existing.

That is a genuine change in how being found works, and it deserves a name. What it does not deserve is a separate discipline sold at a separate price, because most of the work is the same work.

What is genuinely the same

  • Being crawlable. If a crawler cannot reach the page, nothing else matters to either.
  • Answering real questions in plain language rather than performing expertise.
  • A clean site structure where each page has one clear job.
  • Consistent business information across the web.
  • Genuine reviews and mentions from sources that are not you.

If someone tells you AEO requires abandoning your SEO work, they are describing a sales strategy rather than a technical reality.

What is genuinely different

Four things, and they are worth taking seriously.

  • Rendering. Google renders JavaScript in a second pass. Most AI crawlers do not render it at all — they read the raw HTML and stop. A site that assembles its content in the browser is close to invisible to them.
  • Structure over frequency. Keyword density is irrelevant. What matters is whether a passage answers a question cleanly enough to be lifted and quoted.
  • Structured data carries more weight. Schema is helpful for search and close to essential for answer engines, because it states plainly what would otherwise have to be inferred.
  • Third-party corroboration counts for more. Assistants cannot verify your claims about yourself, so they lean on reviews, profiles, directories and mentions elsewhere.

The uncomfortable part

You cannot check your position. There is no rank tracker for ChatGPT, no submission form, and no dashboard. The only honest measurement is running realistic prompts on a schedule and recording what comes back — which is exactly why so much of what is sold as AEO is unfalsifiable.

What a small business should actually do

In order, and none of it is exotic:

  • Make sure the site ships its content as HTML rather than assembling it in the browser. This is the single biggest lever.
  • Put a forty-word direct answer at the top of every page, in the words a person would actually use.
  • Add and validate structured data — what the business is, where it works, what each page offers.
  • Get the Google Business Profile, the website and the directories all saying the same thing.
  • Keep specific figures in the copy. Thirty-two suburbs, four to five years, a fixed hourly rate. Concrete facts get quoted; adjectives do not.
  • Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt, deliberately rather than by accident.

Notice that four of those six also improve ordinary search rankings. That is the honest summary of AEO: mostly good SEO practice, with rendering and structured data promoted from "should" to "must".

What to be sceptical about

Guaranteed inclusion in AI answers. Proprietary "AI ranking scores". Anything that cannot be verified by a test you could run yourself. The field is young enough that the gap between what is claimed and what is measurable is wide, and it is worth asking for the measurement method before the invoice.

Common follow-up questions

Should we stop doing SEO and do AEO instead?

No. They are the same foundation with a different emphasis on top. A business that abandons SEO for AEO loses the channel that still drives most of its traffic in exchange for one that is growing but smaller.

Does AEO matter for a local business?

Increasingly. "Who should I call for X near me" is exactly the kind of question people now put to an assistant, and the answer names two or three businesses. For a local service business that is a high-intent moment worth being present for.

How would we measure it?

Run a fixed set of realistic prompts across the main assistants each month and record the answers verbatim, so change is visible. Separately, track AI referral traffic in analytics — it now appears as its own source.
